Police have arrested Mahfuzur Rahman Konok, a former Sub-Inspector (SI) of the District Detective Branch (DB) Police in Narayanganj, in connection with the killing of Jubo Dal leader Shawon. The incident occurred during a rally marking BNP’s founding anniversary.
On Friday (December 3), Konok was produced before Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafia Sharmin’s court, where police sought a seven-day remand. The court, however, ordered his imprisonment and set Monday for a hearing on the matter, confirmed Nasir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station.
Konok was arrested late Thursday night from his current workplace at 13 APBN in Dhaka Airport.
On September 1, 2022, violence erupted during a rally organized by the Narayanganj District and Metropolitan BNP to celebrate the party’s anniversary. During the clash, Shaon was shot by a bullet allegedly fired from Konok’s Chinese rifle. Shaon was rushed to Narayanganj General Hospital but was declared dead.
Two years later, on October 21, 2024, Shaon’s elder brother, Md. Milon, filed a case naming 52 individuals as accused, including the then Deputy Commissioner (DC), Superintendent of Police (SP), and five former Members of Parliament (MP).
