Shilpakala DG Jamil resigns

Noted theatre personality Syed Jamil Ahmed has announced his resignation as Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, citing ‘bureaucratic challenges’ and ‘restrictions on artistic expression’.
He announced his premature resignation while addressing the closing ceremony of the ‘Munir Chowdhury First National Drama Festival’ as the chief guest at the academy on Friday.
The theatre personality handed over his resignation to Shilpakala Academy Secretary (Deputy Secretary) Md Wares Hossain, who was on stage at the event, as per media reports.
However, as the academy
secretary does not have the authority to accept the resignation letter, Wares said, “I have only received this [resignation letter] as the Secretary of the Shilpakala Academy. But no official or employee of the Shilpakala Academy has accepted this resignation letter.”
Mohammad Wares Hossainalso said he does not have the authority to accept the resignation; that responsibility lies with the Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
A distinguished theatre director and founding chair of Dhaka University’s Department of Theater and Music, Jamil was appointed as the DG of Shilpakala Academy on 9 September 2024.
