Staff Reporter :

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) yesterday separately announced their full panels for the upcoming Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election, slated for 12 October, intensifying the run-up to the long-awaited polls.
Shibir declared its 21-member panel under the banner Shampritir Shikkharthi Jote at around 2:30pm on the university campus. Ibrahim Hossain Roni, a history student from the 2017-18 session, has been nominated for vice-president (VP), while Sayed Bin Habib (History, 2019-20) and Sajjad Hossain Munna (Finance, 2019-20) will contest for the posts of general secretary (GS) and assistant general secretary respectively.

Announcing the panel, Shibir’s Human Resources Secretary Saidul Islam said the student body had prioritised inclusivity in its nominations. CU unit president Mohammad Ali added, “We have tried to ensure representation from all departments. If elected, we will work with students from every level.”

The Shibir panel also features Mohammad Shawon for sports and games secretary, Shahporan Maruf for assistant sports and games secretary, Harezul Islam for literature, culture and publication secretary, and Jihad Hossain for assistant literature, culture and publication secretary. Among the other nominees are Abdullah Al Noman (office secretary), Jannatul Adnan Nusrat (assistant office secretary), Tahsina Rahman (social welfare and environment secretary), Tanvir Anzum Shovon (research and innovation secretary), and Mahbubur Rahman (science and IT secretary).
Female student welfare has been given notable space, with Nahima Akter Dipa and Jannatul Ferdous Rita nominated as secretary and assistant secretary respectively. The panel further includes nominees for health, liberation war and democratic movement, career development and international affairs, communication and housing, law and human rights, library and cafeteria, as well as five executive members.
Earlier in the day, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal unveiled its panel at the university’s Buddhijibi Chattar. JCD’s organising secretary Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, a philosophy student from the 2015-16 session, has been nominated for vice-president, while Shafayet Hossain, a 2016-17 sports science student, is the general secretary nominee.
The announcement was made at a press conference addressed by JCD Central Committee General Secretary Nasir Uddin. “We believe courageous, talented and prudent students will vote to make the Chhatra Dal panel victorious. Those nominated have long worked for students’ rights and are among the most popular in the student community,” he said. Nasir also alleged irregularities in student union polls elsewhere but insisted that JCD would uphold the tradition of contesting with a full panel.
According to the Cucsu election schedule, the preliminary list of candidates will be published on 21 September. Candidates may withdraw their nominations by 3:30pm on 23 September, and the final list will be released on 25 September. Voting will take place on 12 October from 9am to 4pm.
