The Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Sompritir Shikkharthi Jote panel has won a landslide victory in the Chattogram University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election, securing 24 out of 26 central posts, including the key positions of vice-president and general secretary.

Chief Election Commissioner Professor Monir Uddin announced the results at around 5 am on Thursday at the university’s BBA Faculty auditorium, saying that the polls were held peacefully and in a festive atmosphere.

In the contest for the vice-president (VP) post, Ibrahim Hossain Rony, backed by Shibir, won with 7,983 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Sazzad Hossain of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), who received 4,374 votes.

For the position of general secretary (GS), Sayed Bin Habib, also from the Shibir-backed panel, triumphed with 8,031 votes, defeating Md Shafayat Hossain of Chhatra Dal, who polled 2,734 votes.

The only exception to Shibir’s sweeping victory came in the race for assistant general secretary (AGS), where JCD’s Ayubur Rahman Toufiq won with 7,014 votes, defeating Sajjad Hossain Munna of Shibir, who received 5,045 votes.

Another non-Shibir victory came from Tamanna Mahbub Preeti of the Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya panel, who won the assistant sports secretary post with 4,829 votes, surpassing Shibir’s Shah Poran Maruf, who received 4,594 votes.

Despite these two exceptions, overall control of CUCSU now rests firmly with Sompritir Shikkharthi Jote, which captured nearly all key posts.

Other elected office bearers include Sports Secretary Mohammad Shawon, Deputy Sports Secretary Tamanna Mahbub Preeti of Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya, Literature, Culture and Publications Secretary Harej Matbar and his deputy Jihad Hossain, Office Secretary Abdullah Al Noman who won with 3,258 votes, and Deputy Office Secretary Jannatul Adan Nusrat. Nahima Akter Deepa was elected Women Students’ Welfare Secretary with Jannatul Ferdous Rita as her deputy.

Md Mahbubur Rahman won as Science and ICT Secretary, Tanvir Anjum Shovon as Research and Innovation Secretary, Tahsina Rahman as Social Welfare and Environment Secretary, Afnan Hossain Imran as Health Secretary, and Md Monayem Sharif as Liberation War and Democratic Movements Secretary.

Mehedi Hasan Sohan was elected Career Development and International Affairs Secretary, while Md Ishaq Bhuiyan became Communications and Housing Secretary with Obaidul Salman as his deputy. Fazle Rabbi Tawhid won as Law and Human Rights Secretary, and Masum Billah as Library and Cafeteria Secretary.

Elected executive members are Jannatul Ferdous Sanjida, Adnan Sharif, Akash Dash, Salman Farsi, and Md Sohanur Rahman.

A total of 908 candidates contested in the CUCSU and hall union elections — 415 for the 26 CUCSU posts and 493 for 14 hall union positions. The draft voter list contained 27,521 students, and voting took place across 689 booths at 15 centres within five faculty buildings from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.

This marks Shibir’s first CUCSU victory in over four decades. The organisation last won the CUCSU polls in 1981, during the fifth election, when Jasim Uddin Sarkar became vice-president and Abdul Gaffar general secretary.

In the sixth CUCSU election held on 8 February 1990, a joint panel of student groups emerged victorious, with Nazim Uddin of Jatiya Chhatra League elected VP and Azim Uddin Ahmad of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front as GS.

The sweeping win by Shibir-backed candidates in the 2025 CUCSU election marks a historic comeback for the group, restoring its long-lost dominance in Chattogram University’s student politics.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has said the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election was “acceptable overall” despite some irregularities.

“There were some irregularities, as students themselves pointed out. Indelible ink was used, the LED board was shut down, our agents faced obstacles at some centres, and outsiders were present on campus.

Still, overall, we consider the election acceptable, and we thank everyone involved,” JCD Central General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said while speaking at a press conference in the Chattogram University campus yesterday afternoon.

He also pledged to cooperate with the newly elected representatives.
After 35 years, a student union election has been held, and the elected representatives will serve for one year, he said, adding that the university has always played a leading role in the movement for knowledge and freedom.

“In the 2024 movement, two students of this university sacrificed their lives. We have long spoken about the need for this election,” he added.
