Staff Reporter :

An alarming rise in water levels due to upstream runoff and continuous heavy rainfall has led to the flooding of a number of districts in Mymensingh division, with a warning of new districts including Sunamganj.

Approximately 40,000 families of 71 villages across four unions in Nalitabari Upazila in Sherpur are now stranded, prompting immediate efforts from local administration and the military.

As of today, the two-lane road connecting Nalitabari to Nakla Upazila has been submerged, complicating access to affected areas.

In response, the Bangladesh Army has deployed four speedboats to assist in evacuating residents from inundated zones.

Relief efforts are being coordinated by various government and non-government organizations, political parties, and volunteer groups.

According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), in Mymensingh division, water level of the Kangsa, Jinjiram, Someswari and Old Brahmaputra rivers are increasing.

At present, Bhugai river in Sherpur district, Nakuagaon and Jinjiram river in Jamalpur district are flowing above the danger level at Goalkanda point.

The flood situation in the low-lying areas along the Jinjiram River in Jamalpur district may deteriorate slightly.

On the other hand, in the next 24 hours, the water level of Kangsha and Someswari rivers in Netrakona district may cross the danger level and may flood some low-lying areas, FFWC reported.

The Sherpur Water Development Board reported that while river levels in the upstream areas have slightly decreased, local low-lying regions continue to experience significant flooding.

As of 10 am, the Bhugai River was flowing 53 centimeters below the danger mark, and the Chellakhali River was similarly below the threshold.

Reports indicate that heavy rain has persisted since Thursday night, alongside runoff from the hills of Meghalaya, India, causing the Bhugai and Chellakhali rivers to overflow.
