Staff Reporter :

Heavy rainfall in parts of Bangladesh and neighboring Indian states has caused rivers in the Mymensingh division, including Kangsha, Jinjiram, Someshwari, and the Old Brahmaputra, to overflow, flooding low-lying areas.

The Bhugai River in Sherpur and Jinjiram River in Jamalpur are currently flowing above danger levels.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has predicted continued heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, raising concerns about ongoing flooding in Sherpur, Jamalpur, Netrokona, and Mymensingh districts.

The situation is worsening, with new areas in Sherpur’s Nalitabari, Jinaiagati, and Sribordi upazilas submerged, affecting over 150 villages.

In this sudden flood, three people, including an elderly individual and a woman, lost their lives, while an indigenous man’s body was found in Jinaiagati. Around half a million people are currently waterlogged.

Flooding has severely damaged crops, including 20,000 hectares of Aman rice and 1,000 hectares of vegetable farms, impacting around 65,400 farmers.

Roads and embankments have been damaged, cutting off transportation between Dhaka and Sherpur, and traffic has halted on several regional roads.

Authorities have started distributing relief supplies, and efforts to assess the damage to fish farms and agricultural land are underway.

The district administration is on high alert, monitoring the situation and providing support to affected areas.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rainfall has also caused waterlogging in Noakhali, leaving 1.2 million people stranded.

In other areas like Kurigram and the capital, incessant rain has worsened conditions, leading to waterlogged streets and shops being forced to close.

The ongoing rainfall has disrupted daily life, with labourers and daily wage earners facing particular hardship due to reduced opportunities to work.

The heavy downpour has also raised concerns about potential landslides in hilly regions, especially in the Chattogram division.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall on Saturday, waterlogging occurred in various areas of the capital, including Kakrail, Nayapaltan, Shantinagar, parts of Mohammadpur, Merul Badda, the DIT Project area, ECB, Malibagh, Saidabad, the new road from Agargaon to Jahangir Gate, Khamaarbari to Farmgate, areas adjacent to the Farmgate-Tejgaon truck stand, New Market, Shonir Akhra, Old Dhaka, Bangshal, Nazimuddin Road, Dhanmondi, Mirpur 13, and parts of Hatirjheel.

Rickshaw and van drivers, hawkers, and others who have ventured outside for work are getting drenched in the rain.

Many have been seen standing by the roadside, soaked after several rounds of rain since morning. To avoid getting too cold from the rain, many have wrapped themselves in plastic sheets.
