Shamsher Mobin sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Friday sent Trinamool BNP Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury to jail in a case lodged over murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim in 2023.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Afnan Somi passed the order, as police produced Chowdhury before the court and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of probe.

Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury was arrested from the city’s Banani DOHS area on October 17.
According to the case documents, BNP called a grand rally on October 28, 2023.

To foil the programme, Awami League too called its own grand rally in the capital. At one stage, Awami League goons, with the help of police, attacked the BNP’s rally in Nayapaltan, killing Shamim on the spot.

The case was filed with the capital’s Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024. Shamsher M. Chowdhury Bir Bikrom is a Bangladeshi diplomat and served as the Foreign Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs from October 2001 to March 2005.

He also served as the ambassador of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, Germany, Vietnam and United States. Chowdhury is the Chairman of the Trinamool BNP.[2] He was arrested after the fall of the Awami League government.
Chowdhury was born on 1 May 1950 in Chittagong, East Pakistan, Pakistan. His parents were Abdul Mubeen Chowdhury and Tahmeed-un-Nahar. His paternal home is in Sylhet District.
