A Dhaka court on Friday placed former shipping minister Shajahan Khan on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the killing of 14-year-old Abdul Motaleb in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed passed the order as the police sought a 10-day remand.
Earlier in the day, Dhanmondi model police station sub-inspector Md Khokon Mia, also the case’s investigating officer, produced Shajahan Khan before the court.
Shajahan Khan’s lawyer, Sri Pran Nath, sought bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted a seven-day remand.
The victim’s father, Abdul Matin, filed the case with Dhanmondi police station, mentioning the names of 176 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to the case statement, on August 4, near the Zigatola bus stand, the accused, following their plan and orders, attacked the students and the general public with the intention of killing them.
They detonated hundreds of sound grenades, tear shells, and cocktails and fired rubber bullets and petrol bombs.
Many unarmed students were injured or killed at the scene, including the victim Abdul Motaleb, who was shot in the chest and neck and died on the spot.
On Thursday night, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Shajahan at a house in Dhanmondi. Shajahan Khan was elected as a member of parliament from the Madaripur-2 constituency for the eighth consecutive term this year. He is also the executive president of the Bangladesh Workers Federation.
He was first elected as an MP from the Madaripur-2 constituency as an independent candidate in 1986.
