Today is the 89th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is going to observe the day with profound respect marking birth anniversary of its founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.
Ziaur Rahman, born on January 19, 1936, in Bagbari, Bogura, founded the BNP in 1978 and served as the seventh president of the country. Tragically, he was assassinated by a group of army officers on May 30, 1981, at the Chattogram Circuit House.
On Thursday, the BNP announced a series of day-long programmes to mark the occasion. Party flags will be hoisted atop its offices, including the Nayapaltan headquarters, on Sunday morning.
At 11 a.m., BNP leaders and activists, led by standing committee members, will lay wreaths at Zia’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. In the afternoon, the party will hold a discussion in Zia’s memory at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Various programmes, including discussions and the distribution of warm clothes, will also be organised by BNP’s associate bodies as part of the celebration. Party units at the city, district, and upazila levels will also participate, each organising their own events to mark the day.
In a message issued for the occasion, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid profound respect to Ziaur Rahman, highlighting his significant contributions to the Liberation War, national development, and the establishment of multiparty democracy. He also prayed for the eternal peace of Zia’s departed soul.
