The Shaheed Abrar Fahad Stadium has been inaugurated in Kushtia by Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, the Adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Abrar Fahad’s father, Barkat Ullah.
The formal inauguration took place at the Kushtia District Stadium at 12:30 PM on Thursday, March 6.
During the event, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan stated, “Abrar Fahad is not just a name; he represents the chain of resistance against aggression.
To keep his memory alive, the Kushtia Stadium has been renamed in his honor. This stadium will also be further modernised.”
He continued, “In the July mass uprising, the youth of this country drew inspiration from Abrar Fahad, giving their lives for the cause.
To free this country from aggression, the youth of Bangladesh surged onto the streets.
Eventually, we forced the aggressive foreign power’s most significant figure, Sheikh Hasina, to flee from Bangladesh.”
The adviser also paid tribute to all the martyrs and those injured during the July mass uprising, emphasising that, “In the long struggle against fascism and aggression, those who sacrificed, including Abrar Fahad, will always be remembered by the people of Bangladesh and future generations.
That is why we have renamed the Kushtia District Stadium after Abrar Fahad. Moreover, we will rename other public institutions across the country in honor of martyrs and freedom fighters.”
The sports adviser added, “The fascist government tried to erase Abrar Fahad’s memory.
They wouldn’t allow any news or programs related to him. When people tried to organise events, there would be attacks, and those involved would face imprisonment and torture.
But the names of those who sacrifice for the nation cannot be erased.
This is once again proven, as now every person in Bangladesh remembers Abrar Fahad. He remains an inspiration in every struggle against aggression.”
The event , chaired by the District Commissioner of Kushtia, Toufiqur Rahman, was attended by various officials, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Rezaul Maksud Jahedi, and Joint Secretary Aminul Islam.
Earlier in the day, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan visited Abrar Fahad’s grave in Koya village, Kumar Khali, to pay his respects.
He also inaugurated the renovation of the mosque built in Abrar Fahad’s name.
Construction of the stadium began on January 13, 2022, at a cost of around 40 crore taka.
After the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, the stadium’s name was changed from Sheikh Russell to Shaheed Abrar Fahad Stadium in honor of the late student leader.
