Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Abdur Rahman Khan, has urged officials to set aside recent disruptions and concentrate fully on their responsibilities in the interest of the nation.

Speaking at a media briefing held today (30 June) at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon, he stated, “We hope we won’t face such challenges again in the future.

My appeal to everyone is to continue working with the same level of dedication and efficiency that they have demonstrated in the past.”

The NBR chairman reported that revenue collection had surpassed Tk 3.6 lakh crore as of this morning. While final figures for the 2023-24 fiscal year are expected within two to three weeks, he expressed confidence that there would be growth in overall revenue collection compared to the previous fiscal year.

However, he acknowledged that recent protests and disruptions had adversely affected the revenue collection process.

According to data from the Ministry of Finance, revenue collection for FY2023-24 stood at Tk 3.63 lakh crore. This falls significantly short of the revised annual target of Tk 4.65 lakh crore, originally set at Tk 4.8 lakh crore. Based on the current data, the NBR’s shortfall alone is expected to exceed Tk 1 lakh crore-a record deficit.

The chairman’s remarks come at a time when revenue performance remains under close scrutiny, with the government facing increasing fiscal pressure to fund ambitious development plans and meet international reform commitments.
