A seminar on innovative assessment (IA) methods for primary school students was held on Wednesday at the Primary Education Directorate auditorium in Dhaka.

Organised by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the event featured Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, Primary and Mass Education Adviser, as the chief guest.

Among the special guests offering remarks were Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abarar, Executive Director of the National Literacy Campaign Rasheda K. Chowdhury, and Director General of the Primary Education Directorate Abu Noor Md. Shamsuzzaman, says a press release.

The seminar highlighted the innovative “Shantiganj Model,” developed by Executive Officer Sukanta Saha of Shantiganj Upazila. This creative model, recognized for fostering competitive spirit among teachers and students, encourages regular school attendance and student engagement. It evaluates fourth and fifth-grade students and indirectly assesses teachers based on student outcomes.

The specialized quality improvement test and ranking system have created a competitive environment in Sunamganj, leading to over 80% student participation in exams, improved subject proficiency, and reduced dropout rates.

Praised the “Shantiganj Model,” Adviser Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar described the initiative as a highly commendable step toward improving primary education in Sunamganj.

He noted that the ranking system based on exam results for both schools and subject teachers is truly exceptional, adding that widespread adoption could revolutionize primary education across the country.

Special guest Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abarar emphasized the need to focus on realistic measures to enhance education quality. He said that the long-standing concerns about education standards can only be addressed through practical and impartial evaluation.
The seminar was chaired by Primary and Mass Education Secretary Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana.
