With an increase in robberies, snatchings, and thefts across the country, including in the capital, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury pledged a prompt response on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after a core committee meeting on law and order at the Ministry, he stated, “The presence of law enforcement will be noticeable from this evening.”

He acknowledged some progress but also recognised that improvements were still needed.

“The law and order situation is satisfactory, but incidents like the recent Banasree robbery-which used to take days to solve-are now being detected almost immediately,” he explained.

“While small crimes have always occurred, we are focused on preventing their recurrence.”

Pressed about his directives, he was resolute: “You will notice a significant increase in law enforcement activity tonight.

There is public concern, and I have convened this meeting to reassure the public. I have instructed agencies to intensify efforts starting this evening-you will see a difference.”

In a related statement, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that joint forces would begin combined patrolling in key areas across the country, including Dhaka, from Monday evening.

He shared this update at a press briefing on Monday afternoon following the core committee meeting at the Secretariat.

“This meeting was crucial, and several decisions were made,” said the press secretary. “The first decision is to increase patrolling throughout Dhaka, particularly in areas where law and order has deteriorated.

The joint forces will include police, the army, BGB, and the navy, and they will carry out coordinated patrolling. Checkpoints will be established at several locations.”

Earlier, in response to calls for his resignation over the law-and-order situation, Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury blamed “associates of the Awami League” for the rise in crimes, including robberies and muggings.

In an early morning briefing at his Baridhara DOHS residence, the Home Adviser accused the Awami League’s associates of spending money to sow unrest in the country, but assured that the interim government would not allow it to succeed.
