Another murder in broad daylight has taken place in front of the court in Khulna.
This time, the scene is the road in front of the Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court.
According to newspaper reports, the terrorists at around 12 noon shot and stabbed two young men to death in the front gate of the court. The brutal incident took place in public.
There is no doubt that this incident bears witness to the fragile law and order situation prevailing in the country.
The weakness of the security system in a sensitive area like court premises itself has naturally raised deep concerns and questions in various quarters.
As the courts in a democratic state are the last refuge for anyone seeking justice, so too is the security system there. But the two murders exposed the weaknesses of the security system in a worrying way.
We know that the responsibility for security in the courtroom lies entirely with the police; who have so far failed to control the overall law and order in the country.
According to media reports, in the last 10 months, there have been nearly 200 murders in the capital; an average of about 20 murders per month cannot be seen as a natural deterioration in law and order.
Another report says, in the last 15 months, 35 people have been murdered in Chattogram, 41 in Khulna, and 84 in Bogura. A significant number of them have lost their lives to terrorist gunfire.
It is also true that since the mass uprising, a significant number of top terrorists have been released from prison, many of whom are reported to have become active in the criminal world again.
It is mysterious that instead of arresting them again, the police are repeatedly telling them to keep them under surveillance.
In this situation, many new terrorist groups have also emerged in different parts of the country.
The government and all concerned must remember that if the security of both plaintiffs and defendants in court is not ensured, people’s trust in the courts will decrease, and the burden of failure on the government will also be heavy.
It is also important to remember that terrorist acts in places like courts seriously question the issue of security.
We believe that the miscreants’ activities are a major obstacle to a stable situation before the upcoming national elections.
Naturally, there is no alternative to a rapid improvement in the law and order situation before that.
So, the government will have to put more effort into restoring normalcy with a view to ensuring security in the courts.
