The Khagrachhari district administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 in the Sadar upazila and municipal areas amid escalating tension and clashes between two groups over a daylong blockade programme.

The order, signed by District Magistrate ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandker, came into effect at 2:00pm and will remain in force until further notice. Authorities said the decision was taken following the deterioration of law and order and fears of casualties and damage to property.

Earlier in the day, under the banner of ‘Jumma Chhatra Janata’, demonstrators enforced a daylong blockade demanding justice for the alleged gang rape of a teenage indigenous girl. As part of the programme, road communication to and from Khagrachhari remained completely suspended, paralyzing transport and movement. From early morning, protesters blocked key roads by burning tyres and placing tree logs. Tension mounted when the demonstrators alleged that they came under attack near the Sadar upazila premises, leaving at least two people injured.

News of the assault triggered clashes and chase between the rival groups, creating panic in the town.

Announcing the restrictive order, Deputy Commissioner Iftekharul Islam told reporters:
“We were compelled to impose Section 144 to avoid further escalation and protect lives and property. The order will be lifted once the situation returns to normal.”
Confirming the unrest, Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police (SP) Arefin Jewel said law enforcement was on alert:
“There is tension between the two sides. Police and other forces are trying to bring the situation under control.”
Protesters’ Position
Protest leaders, however, blamed “outsiders” for creating unrest during what they described as a peaceful demonstration.
Ukyenu Marma, spokesperson of Jumma Chhatra Janata, said:
“From the beginning we have been observing the blockade peacefully. We urged everyone to conclude it peacefully. But some miscreants tried in various ways to discredit this student and people-led programme.”
Situation Remains Volatile
By late afternoon, movement in Khagrachhari town was restricted, with shops shuttered and residents avoiding the streets. Security forces were seen patrolling key points to prevent further violence.
The imposition of Section 144 has effectively banned public gatherings, rallies, and processions, leaving uncertainty over how long the restrictions will continue.
