Another firefighter injured in Monday’s chemical warehouse explosion in Tongi has died while undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The victim, Nurul Huda, 38, who sustained burns on 100% of his body, passed away at 2:40pm on Wednesday (24 September), confirmed Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute.
Earlier, firefighter Shamim Ahmed, 40, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday (23 September), a day after the blast. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon (22 September) when a fire broke out at a tin-shed chemical warehouse inside a garment factory at Sahara Market in Gazipur’s Tongi Bscic Industrial City.
Fire service teams rushed to the spot around 3:45pm, but soon after their arrival, a massive explosion ripped through the warehouse.
Six people, including three firefighters and a factory official, were critically injured in the blast.
They were rescued and taken to hospital, while the blaze was brought under control at around 7pm.
