A second-grade schoolgirl, Marjia Akter (10), was killed after being hit by a speeding truck in Nilphamari. The accident occurred around 2:30 pm on Thursday in front of the District Model Mosque.
Marjia was the daughter of Mostakim Shah from Shahpara area of Pirer Mazar in Tupamari Union, Nilphamari Sadar Upazila. She was a class two student at Momtaz Memorial School in the town.
According to locals, Marjia attended a class party at school in the morning. After the event ended around noon, she was returning home on a motorcycle with her uncle, Hasu Shah.
On the way, she felt thirsty near the Model Mosque, prompting her uncle to stop the motorcycle and go to a nearby hotel to fetch water.
He left Marjia seated on the motorcycle at a safe distance. At that moment, a speeding truck lost control and rammed into the parked motorcycle. Marjia was crushed under the truck’s wheels and died on the spot.
In the aftermath of the accident, enraged locals vandalized the truck and set it on fire. Fire service personnel rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze, while police brought the situation under control.
Confirming the incident, Nilphamari Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M.R. Saeed said, “After the accident, locals detained the truck.
When police attempted to bring it to the station, the crowd insisted on keeping it in their custody. Legal procedures are underway regarding the incident.”
