In a significant overhaul of the police administration, the Home Ministry and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued separate gazette notifications on Tuesday, announcing a major reshuffle in key positions.
Monirul Islam, the Chief of the Special Branch (SB) of Police and Additional Inspector General (IGP), has been removed from his position and reassigned to the police headquarters. He will be replaced by Md. Shah Alam, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Railway Police, who has been appointed as the new Chief of the Special Branch.
Additionally, Md. Toufiq Mahbub Chowdhury has been appointed as the Chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Mohammad Ali Mia, the Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been transferred to the police headquarters.
Other notable changes include: Anwar Hossain, Additional DIG at the police headquarters, has been reassigned to the Specialised Training Centre in Khagrachhari; seven officers with the rank of Additional DIG have been transferred; five Additional Deputy Commissioners of DMP have been promoted to Acting Deputy Police Commissioner positions; and eighteen police inspectors, including several Officers-in-Charge (OCs) in the capital, have been transferred.
In addition, Md. Moniruzzaman, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and Md. Abdul Baten, DIG of Rangpur Range, have been relieved of their duties.
This reshuffle follows the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister and her departure from the country on August 5. The interim government, formed on August 8, has faced challenges including damage to police stations and a temporary withdrawal of police personnel.
