Sarjis Alam, a prominent coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced his resignation as the general secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation.
He disclosed the decision in a post on his verified Facebook profile on Wednesday morning.
“I am no longer the general secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation. Changes have been made to the foundation’s constitution, structure, and working process to accelerate its progress,” Sarjis wrote in his post.
According to his statement, the foundation’s operations will now be overseen by an executive committee, with a chief executive officer (CEO) leading the office. Currently, Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho holds the CEO position.
The governing body, comprising four advisers specializing in health, social welfare, local government, and ICT, will manage the foundation’s policymaking.
Sarjis emphasized that the position of general secretary no longer exists under the revamped structure.
Reflecting on his tenure, he stated that the foundation began providing financial assistance to martyr families on October 1, with its office becoming operational on October 15. Sarjis assumed the role of general secretary on October 21 and served until December 31, a period of approximately two months and ten days. He officially relinquished his responsibilities on January 7, when his signing authority was transferred.
During his time in office, Sarjis reported significant progress in the foundation’s initiatives. By December 31, financial aid had been distributed to 628 of the 826 verified martyr families. Additionally, around 2,000 of the 11,000 verified injured individuals received assistance.
“I continued to serve as long as I could dedicate my maximum time to the foundation. When I realized that it would no longer be possible for me to give the required time, I stepped down from my position,” he explained. Sarjis highlighted the importance of acknowledging personal limitations and adjusting responsibilities accordingly, describing such actions as a demonstration of courage.
Sarjis also noted that he did not draw any salary or honorarium during his tenure, underscoring his commitment to honesty and accountability.
The July Shaheed Smriti Foundation’s restructured framework and new leadership aim to ensure sustained progress in supporting martyr families and injured individuals.
