A court on Wednesday placed former private industry affairs adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina Salman F Rahman, and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak on a four-day remand each in connection with a case filed for the attempted murder of Dhaka College student Md Shamim during the student movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam issued the order on Wednesday after a hearing.

Both of them were brought to the court from jail around 9:30am on Wednesday.

Case investigation officer Sub Inspector Md Omar Faruk sought a seven-day remand from the court. After hearing from all sides, the court granted four days for interrogation.

According to the case documents, students of Dhaka College brought out a peaceful rally in support of the anti-discrimination student movement in front of their college on 16 July. Cadres of Awami League and its front organisations attacked the rally, firing indiscriminately at the students. Md Shamim received shrapnel injuries on his face in the attack.

On 28 November, he filed the case with the New Market Police Station.

Salman F Rahman, one of the stalwarts of the former autocratic government of Sheikh Hasina, was arrested from the capital’s Sadarghat area on 13 August as he was trying to flee the capital along with former law minister Anisul Huq through the waterways. Palak was arrested from the capital’s Nikunja area the next day.
