Nine prominent political and administrative figures, including former Prime Minister’s adviser Salman F Rahman and former law minister Anisul Huq, have been officially shown arrested in multiple new cases linked to last year’s ‘July Uprising’ anti-discrimination movement.

The arrests were recorded in several cases filed with Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka.
On Wednesday, investigating officers produced the accused before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, seeking permission to show them arrested in the pending cases. Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia granted the petitions after hearings.

The other high-profile figures shown arrested include former ministers Amir Hossain Amu and Dr Dipu Moni, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former Inspector General of Police Shahidul Haque, former secretary Jahangir Alam, former MP Kazi Monirul Islam Manu, and former Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan.

According to court documents, Kazi Monirul Islam Manu has been implicated in eight separate cases.
Anisul Huq, Abul Hasan, Jahangir Alam, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and Shahidul Haque each face arrest in two cases, while Salman F Rahman, Dr Dipu Moni, and Amir Hossain Amu have been named in one case each.

A visibly emotional scene unfolded in the court when State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, wearing a helmet, bulletproof vest, and handcuffs, stood in the dock and wept profusely.

He did not speak to the media but made an emotional gesture toward his family members, who were waiting outside the courtroom.

The cases stem from various allegations related to the mass protests and demonstrations that rocked parts of the country during the ‘July Uprising’ last year.
