Salman, Anisul, Atiqul, ex-IGP Mamun placed on remand

Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former private industry and investment adviser to ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in connection with the Asif murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station in the capital.

And another court in Dhaka granted three days remand to former Law Minister Anisul Haque and four days to former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam.

On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M A Azharul Islam issued these order after hearing.

The accused were presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka from prison. The investigation officer of the case, CID Inspector Mohammad Altaf Hossain, sought a five-day remand for them. Defense lawyers opposed the remand request and sought bail, while Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of remand.

Another court in Dhaka granted three days remand to former Law Minister Anisul Haque and four days to former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam.

The court granted the remand of Anisul Haque in the case of attempted murder of van driver Insan Ali in Mohammadpur police station area during the anti-discrimination student movement and Atiqul Islam in the case of murder of victim Sohag Mia in Badda police station area.

They were produced in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka from the jail on Wednesday. At the time, the officials investigating the case applied for a 10-day remand for Atiqul Islam and five days for Anisul Haque.

After hearing both parties, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam rejected their bail application and granted Anisul three days and Atiqul four days remand.

Kiran and Saikat on four-day remand:
Former acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, Md Asadur Rahman Kiran and Tanvir Hasan Saikat, general secretary of the banned student organisation Chatra League’s Dhaka University unit, have been placed on a four-day remand.

Kiran was remanded in the Uttara West Police Station case related to an attempted murder of Mamun, while Saikat was remanded in the Dhanmondi Police Station case for the murder of Riaz.

Both accused were presented before the court and the police sought a seven-day remand for each. Defense lawyers opposed the request and applied for bail, while Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued for remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand for each.

According to case details, during an anti-discrimination movement in Mirpur on July 19, Asif participated in the protest. Around 7:30 PM that evening, he was shot by the accused and taken to Suhrawardy Hospital by his fellow activists. He succumbed to his injuries the following day. On November 1, a case was filed at Mirpur Police Station against 22 individuals, naming Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun as the 4th accused and Salman F Rahman as the 7th.

On August 13, based on secret information, Salman F Rahman and Anisul Haque were arrested from the capital’s Sadarghat area while escaping by boat on the basis of secret information
Then on the night of October 16, Mohammadpur Thana police arrested Atiqul Islam from Mohakhali DOHS area of the capital.

On September 3, Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Mamun at night. On November 18, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested Asadur Rahman Kiran at the Sharsha border in Jashore.
On August 14, police arrested Tanvir Hasan Saikat from a hideout in the Nikunja residential area of the capital.

Following their arrests, they were placed on remand in multiple cases, with additional charges filed against them.
