BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed stated on Sunday that the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, is expected to return to Bangladesh soon, once a favourable environment is established.

“We are still working towards creating a suitable atmosphere for his return, which will take a few more days. Nevertheless, he is likely to return shortly,” Salahuddin remarked at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, upon completing a two-week visit to the United Kingdom.

He urged the interim government to unveil a “specific election roadmap,” emphasising its importance to ensure that elections are held in the spirit of national unity and to foster a democratic transition.

Commenting on the initiative by leaders of the July movement to form a new political party, Salahuddin expressed BNP’s openness to the platform.

“However, those forming a new political party must adhere to ethical political practices and should not benefit from undue government support, as seen with allies of the ruling party,” he remarked.

Regarding the July revolutionaries’ call to discard the 1972
constitution, Salahuddin stated, “A country’s constitution represents its fundamental principles. It cannot be discarded, but may undergo amendments or revisions when necessary.”

When asked about his discussions with Tarique Rahman, Salahuddin responded, “Details will be revealed gradually. The Acting Chairman has emphasised the importance of unity,” he added. Salahuddin had travelled to London on December 20 at Tarique Rahman’s invitation.
