Sadarghat Launch Terminal, the country’s busiest and largest water transport hub, is witnessing a surge in passengers as Eid holidaymakers opt for river travel.
The terminal, which had seen a drop in passengers following the opening of the Padma Bridge, is now revitalized due to enhanced management and improved services.
Despite modern road and railway networks, waterways remain a preferred mode of travel for those residing near riverbanks and in the southwestern districts of Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur, and Jhalakathi, as well as southeastern districts like Noakhali, Chandpur, and Laxmipur.
Authorities, including the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and Naval Police, have taken measures to ensure a smooth and safe journey for Eid travelers.
Security has been tightened, and facilities such as clean washrooms, breastfeeding corners, and waiting rooms have been set up for passengers.Speaking to BSS, Chandpur-bound passenger Zahid Ahmed shared his preference for launch travel.
“I take a launch home every Eid. It’s comfortable, cost-effective, and avoids road congestion. There’s more space for luggage, and the journey is more relaxed,” he said.
The Ministry of Shipping has issued directives for passenger safety and service enhancement. Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat has instructed law enforcement agencies to keep the road from Gulistan to Sadarghat free from traffic congestion.
He also conducted surprise inspections at river terminals, including Sadarghat, to oversee the Eid rush firsthand.
To prevent maritime accidents, the movement of bulkheads (sand carriers) has been halted for five days before and after Eid.
