Six factories of the controversial business conglomerate S Alam Group – S Alam Refined Sugar Industries, S Alam Power Plant Limited, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited-NOF, S Alam Power Generation Limited and Infinity C R Strips Industries Limited – in Chattogram were abruptly declared closed on Tuesday.
The closure notice was issued on Tuesday noon, leaving workers and stakeholders puzzled over the sudden shutdown which prompted workers to stage immediate protests in response to the sudden announcement.
Factory officials informed the workers that the factories would reopen once the situation improves. The notice, signed by Mohammad Borhan Uddin, head of the human resources and administration department of S Alam Group, said the factories would remain closed from Wednesday until further notice due to unavoidable circumstances, as ordered by the company authorities.
However, the notice added that the security, supply, and emergency departments of the factory will remain operational during the closure.
Earlier, in an interview with the UK-based Financial Times, Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur said, “After taking control of the banks, S Alam Group Founder Mohammad Saiful Alam and his associates siphoned off ‘at least’ $10 billion from the banking system.”
