In collaboration with the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dhaka Tribune hosted a significant roundtable discussion on “The Power of Women: From the Uprising to Greater Political Participation” at the Hemonto Hall of Hotel The Six Seasons in Dhaka on Sunday, March 9
The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including Dhaka and Northsouth University professors,political leaders, academics, journalists, entrepreneurs, and students, all coming together to discuss the critical role of women in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape.
The discussion was graced by distinguished speakers, including Dr. Rounaq Jahan, Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), and H.E. Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh.
The session was moderated by Esha Aurora, Business Editor of Dhaka Tribune.
Throughout the event, a number of prominent voices shared their insights and experiences.
Barrister Rumin Farhana, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), emphasised the importance of women’s active involvement in politics, stressing the need for creating opportunities for women to break through political barriers. Junayed Saki and Sama Obayed, both notable political figures, also expressed their views on the challenges women face in the political arena and outlined measures that could be taken to address gender inequality in political spaces.
Participants discussed a range of topics, from the barriers women encounter in entering politics, to potential solutions for empowering women in Bangladesh’s political sphere. Acknowledging the challenges, speakers urged for societal change that would allow for greater representation and influence of women in decision-making processes.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Rounaq Jahan stressed that empowering women is not only essential for achieving political equality, but also for the overall progress of the nation.
