‘Rohingya solution lies in Myanmar’
Diplomatic Correspondent :
Efforts to resolve the prolonged Rohingya crisis are gaining renewed momentum with an upcoming international conference and visits from top UN officials. However, the United Nations has emphasized that a sustainable solution ultimately depends on Myanmar, where ongoing conflicts continue to complicate the situation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, on Thursday emphasised that the resolution to the Rohingya crisis ultimately rests in Myanmar.
However, he acknowledged that the situation in Myanmar remains highly complex due to ongoing conflicts.
Following a meeting with Md Touhid Hossain, the Foreign Affairs Adviser to the interim government, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Grandi addressed journalists regarding the issue.
“I am grateful to Bangladesh for its continued hospitality toward the Rohingya people despite numerous challenges.
We have discussed the situation, and I have always maintained that the solution to the Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar. However, the situation there is very complicated, with multiple conflicts ongoing,” Grandi stated.
The UNHCR Chief also announced that an international conference on the Rohingya crisis is scheduled to take place later this year.
“An international conference on the Rohingya situation will be held in the coming months, where UNHCR will extend its support,” he added, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian issue.
The Rohingya crisis remains a significant humanitarian challenge, with over 1.3 million refugees currently residing in Bangladesh, awaiting a sustainable solution for their safe and voluntary repatriation to Myanmar.
Since the beginning of the crisis in August 2017, several attempts were taken by the Awami League government but all their efforts were ended in smoke. Myanmar even did not exhibit any proactive role to bring back their citizens.
