A group of robbers stormed into Rupali Bank in the Chunkutia area of the city’s South Keraniganj on Thursday around 2pm. Armed with weapons, they held the bank officials hostage. Upon receiving the news, police, military personnel, and fire service members quickly arrived at the scene and surrounded the bank with the help of local residents.
According to bank employees, police, and locals, the robbery took place around 2pm on Thursday when a group of armed robbers entered the bank. As the news of the robbery was announced over the loudspeaker of a nearby mosque, several hundred local residents quickly gathered outside the bank and surrounded the branch, locking its doors from the outside.
Soon after, police, fire service teams, and military personnel arrived at the scene, cordoning off the bank. Local government officials have also been reported to be present at the location, coordinating efforts to manage the situation.
Till the filing of this report, law enforcement officials and local residents continue to surround the bank branch. Efforts are being made to persuade the robbers to surrender peacefully. Both security forces and the general public are actively involved in negotiating with the perpetrators to bring the situation to a safe resolution.
South Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam confirmed to the media that two to three robbers are currently inside the bank. He assured that efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation peacefully and safely.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent (SP) Ahmed Muyeed said they have received information confirming that the robbers are armed with firearms. He added that efforts are being made to convince the perpetrators to surrender peacefully.
