Some 400 meter roads (metal and brick-bond) in the rural areas of Bagerhat district damaged by the cyclone “Remal” yet to be repaired or reconstructed though more than one month was already passed. Not only that but also 120 rural establishments including wooden bridges, culverts etc. were damaged very badly in the district. Consequently, the local affected people are very aggrieved.
After visiting some of the affected areas of the district it is found that with the dreadful blows of the cyclone Remal accompanied with tidal surge carpeting of the roads were washed away, bricks-bond roads were broken at many places and bricks were in mess. On the other hand, both metal and brick-bond roads were demolished with the ground at some of the places. The rural roads were damaged very badly miters after miters by the Remal. Besides this, both wooden and iron bridges, culverts and some other structures were broken or badly damaged and consequently, the communication system of the affected areas were disrupted causing hampered to the movement of the people and the total business system. The most sufferers are the minor school and Madrasa going girls and boys. People of Morrelgaj, Sharankhola, Rampal, Mongla and Bagerhat Sadar Upazilas are the worst sufferers. With the initiative of some locals bamboo bridges locally known as Sako were constructed over some canals on temporary basis in order to restore the communication in some of the affected areas.
Md. Khalid Hasan, DC, Bagerhat disclosed, dwelling houses, roads, bridges, culverts and other structures of the district were badly damaged by the tidal surges created following the cyclone Remal swept over the district. As a result, properties worth Tk.644 crors were lost in the district. The matter was brought to all the concerned higher authorities. By this time various steps were taken up to overcome the loss of properties.
