Garment workers – protesting for unpaid wages – clashed with police on Tuesday while attempting to block the Labor Department. During the confrontation, the workers vandalised a police vehicle, intensifying tensions in the Nayapaltan area as the protest escalated.
It has been reported that hundreds of workers from NZDF Garments marched from Paltan around 11:45am on Tuesday to besiege the Labor Department building at Topkhana Road. Shortly after, when police intervened to disperse the crowd, the workers launched an unexpected attack on the officers. The police initially managed to disperse the protesters, but the workers regrouped and began throwing bricks and stones at the police.
To control the situation, the police deployed multiple tear gas canisters and sound grenades.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur confirmed that three constables were injured during the clash and have been admitted to various hospitals in the capital. He said the situation is now under control.
