RMG worker dies in clash with cops in Ashulia

A readymade garment (RMG) worker, Kawsar Hossain Khan, 27, was killed, and 50 others were injured during a clash between workers and law enforcement personnel in the Ashulia industrial area on the outskirts of the capital on Monday.

Among the injured, four sustained bullet wounds. Agitated workers also vandalized five law enforcement vehicles. The deceased, Kawsar, was an employee of Mango Tex in the Tongabari area and hailed from Mehediganj, Barishal.

Yusuf Ali, the duty officer at Enam Medical College Hospital, confirmed Kawsar’s death at around 2:30 PM.
Two other workers, Noyan and Russel, who also suffered bullet injuries, are receiving treatment at the same hospital, Yusuf Ali added.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of workers from various RMG factories staged a demonstration by blocking a road in the Jirabo area around noon, protesting for their unpaid wages and other demands.

As tensions escalated, police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters, which led to a violent clash between the workers and law enforcement.
Attempts were made to contact Md Sarowar Alam, the superintendent of police for Industrial Police-1, for a comment on the incident, but he did not respond to calls.
