Rival group clash leaves 3 killed in Madaripur

Two brothers and their cousin were killed, and at least seven others injured in a clash between rival groups over control of illegal sand trading in Madaripur’s Sadar upazila on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Saiful Sardar, 50, his brother Atabur Sardar, 40, and their cousin Palash Sardar, 17. All three were from Khoajpur village in the upazila, said Chhatak Chakma, additional superintendent of Madaripur Police (Sadar Circle).
Among the injured, three have been transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to locals, a long-standing dispute over illegal sand extraction and territorial dominance in the Arial Khan River had been intensifying between Md Shahjahan Khan and Saiful at Khoajpur Union in the upazila.
Tensions boiled over into a deadly clash between their supporters on Saturday.
During the fight, Saiful and his younger brother Alil were attacked with sharp weapons, dying on the spot.
At least eight others were injured in the violence.
The wounded were rushed to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, where doctors referred three critically injured individuals to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Chatak Chakma said, ”To control the situation, additional police and army personnel have been deployed. Two individuals have been detained for questioning.”
