Rituparna Sengupta’s new movie is ‘Bela’. Rituparna plays the central character in this biopic of Bela Dey.
Who is this Bela Dey? – A prominent anchor, director and writer of Akashvani Kolkata. She is an inspiration to thousands of women. Bela De is one of the very first faces among those who fought for the freedom and recognition of Bengali women.
Bela Dey has written many books on cooking, including ‘Rannar Omnibas’, ‘Ranna Dikshaan’, ‘Hensheel’, ‘Sahaser Ek Ranna’, ‘Bengali’s Kitchen’, ‘Tiffin-er Tukitaki’. Those books are still very popular.
She was the host and director of a popular show called ‘Mohila Mahal’ on Akashvani Kolkata. The show, which gained popularity in the fifties, is still aired on Akashvani. Through this show, Bela became an inspiration to thousands of women. The story of that Bela Dey is now coming to the big screen.
The movie ‘Bela’ was made by Anilava Chatterjee. This is his first movie. In this regard, Anilava said, “Bela Dey’s life is extraordinary, her transition, her fight for comeback are impeccable. Even in today’s time, this fight will inspire every Bengali girl. This is not just a movie, but a document of a time. Bela Dey was the first to teach us that you can win people’s hearts through cooking, that you can create your own destiny. Whenever I thought of making a movie based on her story, the first thing that came to mind was Rituparna Sengupta. Because, I felt, Rituparna is absolutely perfect for this character.”
The movie ‘Bela’ has been made under the banner of Grey Mind Communication. The trailer has already been released. Rituparna’s performance as Bela is being praised in it.
About the movie, Rituparna said, “Bela Dey created an example at that time. The fact that Anilava thought of making a movie about such a person is a big achievement for us. Bela Dey taught many women to live with self-respect through her words and actions.
I am very excited to play the role of Bela Dey.” The film also stars Basavadatta Chatterjee, Saurabh Chakraborty, Biswajit Chakraborty, Bhadra Basu, Bhaswar Chatterjee, Biswanath Basu, etc.
The songs are sung by Arijit Singh, Somlata Acharya and Ipsita Mukherjee.
The film will be released in cinemas in West Bengal on August 29.
