Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission, on Sunday called on political parties to demonstrate greater flexibility and compromise to facilitate the finalization of the upcoming July Charter.
“This dialogue has created a valuable opportunity for political parties to come closer, and we have observed encouraging progress,” Riaz said while inaugurating Sunday’s session between political leaders and the Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
He urged the parties to consider concessions from their initial positions, saying, “Some level of compromise is necessary. In doing so, consult with your party policymakers.”
Riaz noted that several key issues remain unresolved, including the proposed formation of an upper house of parliament, increased women’s representation, and the creation of a National Constitutional Council.
He also mentioned that over the weekend, various political parties engaged with the Commission — and vice versa — expressing interest in further internal consultations on major unresolved issues, particularly the upper house proposal.
