The High Court (HC) on Thursday said the state is addressing the murder incident of a lawyer in Chittagong following the arrest of a former ISKCON leader with utmost importance and has taken full responsibility, leaving no further action for the court.
This remark came from the bench of Justice Farah Mahbuba and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury during a hearing on the petition seeking ban on International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh.
On Wednesday, Supreme Court Lawyer Moniruzzaman filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a ban on ISKCON and the imposition of emergency measures in Chittagong and Rangpur to avoid any untoward situation. The court summoned the attorney general to present the state’s opinion on the matter. The court then instructed a report to be submitted within a day.
Deputy Attorney General Asad Uddin presented details of the measures taken by the government to the court on behalf of the attorney general.
He said, “The government’s stance on the matter is ‘strict.’ Three cases have been filed and 33 people have been arrested so far. Moreover, six more suspects have been identified through CCTV footage. The police are actively investigating, and further information is expected to emerge during interrogations.”
