In the first 17 days of May, remittance inflow into the country amounted to 161 million US dollars, equivalent to Tk 19,642 crore, based on an exchange rate of Tk 122 per dollar. This translates to an average daily remittance of 9.47 million dollars, or approximately Tk 1,155 crore.
According to Bangladesh Bank sources, of the total remittance received in May, 49.33 million dollars came through state-owned banks, while specialized banks like the Agrani Bank contributed over 15 million dollars. Private banks handled 96.27 million dollars, and foreign banks accounted for 31,300 dollars.
However, there were nine banks through which no remittance was received, including specialized banks like Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, and private sector banks such as Community Bank, Citizens Bank, ICB Islamic Bank, Padma Bank, and Seema Bank PLC. Foreign banks, including Habib Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, and State Bank of India, also reported no inflows.
In March of this year, the country saw a record-breaking remittance inflow of 328.99 million dollars in a single month. In January and February, remittance inflows were 219 million and 252.8 million dollars, respectively.
In comparison, last year’s figures showed the following monthly remittance amounts: January – 211.31 million dollars, February – 216.45 million dollars, March – 199.7 million dollars, April – 204.42 million dollars, May – 225.49 million dollars, June – 253.86 million dollars, July – 191.37 million dollars, August – 222.41 million dollars, September – 240.47 million dollars, October – 239.5 million dollars, November – 219.95 million dollars, and December – 263.87 million dollars.
For the entire last year, Bangladesh received a total of 2,688.91 million dollars in remittance, with the highest-ever monthly inflow of approximately 264 million dollars in December. The second-highest remittance inflow was recorded in February at around 253 million dollars.
