Chief Adviser and Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has called for expediting the reform process to ensure that the upcoming national elections can proceed as scheduled in December.
He made the remarks during a meeting with two members of the Commission at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday afternoon. Vice-Chairman of the Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, and member Dr Badiul Alam Majumder briefed Professor Yunus on the Commission’s ongoing activities and stakeholder engagements. Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser (Consensus Building), Monir Haider, was also present.
During the discussion, Professor Riaz and Dr Majumder informed the Chief Adviser that the Commission has been conducting separate consultations with political parties regarding the recommendations proposed by the interim government’s reform bodies. So far, discussions have been completed with eight political parties.
They further noted that a key meeting with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is scheduled for Thursday, which is expected to be pivotal in shaping broader political consensus.
The Commission is also undertaking initiatives to collect public opinion on the reform agenda and to enhance public awareness surrounding the ongoing reform process.
Professor Yunus underscored the importance of inclusive political dialogue and urged the Commission to intensify its engagement with all stakeholders.
“We must advance the overall reform process with urgency and unity, with the objective of holding free, fair, and credible national elections in December,” he stated.
The National Consensus Commission has been mandated to develop a framework for national unity, bridge political divides, and oversee critical reforms ahead of the general elections.
With political tensions on the rise and the electoral timeline fast approaching, the pace of reform is increasingly being viewed as essential to maintaining stability and ensuring a smooth democratic transition.
