Recent tests on the integrity and strength of the reactor containment at Unit 1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) have been successfully completed. The Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), Dr. Jahedul Hasan, confirmed that the tests verified the highest safety standards as per the plant’s design.

During the testing process, a compressor was used to raise the internal pressure of the containment to its design value.

A series of tests were then conducted to confirm the structure’s airtightness and its ability to withstand internal stresses that could arise under abnormal conditions. This phase is particularly critical ahead of the loading of nuclear fuel, as the containment structure serves as the final protective barrier in the event of a hypothetical accident.

The containment is a robust physical barrier constructed from pre-stressed reinforced concrete and lined internally with sealed steel. It is designed to prevent the release of radioactive substances into the environment during emergencies, localize radiation within the structure, and withstand potential external impacts.

Dr. Hasan also noted that a series of “hot media tests” will soon be conducted at Unit 1. These tests will include heating the coolant circuit to its design temperature and generating steam to assess key safety systems, including the steam release device under active conditions.

Rosatom’s media wing stated that the testing procedures generate controlled noise at the site, which is planned and poses no risk to the public. Rosatom reaffirmed that safety remains its top priority, emphasizing that the project strictly adheres to all mandatory safety standards and regulatory requirements.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors, providing a total capacity of 2,400 MW. The project is being implemented with both technical and financial assistance from Russia. The Engineering Division of Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation serves as the general contractor for the project.
