Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) side Rangpur Riders put a brave show to beat Lahore Qalandars by 23 runs on DLS method in rain-shortened match Global Super League (GSL) T20 semi-final at Providence, West Indies on Friday.
The victory helped them storm into final where Australian side Victoria await for them. The final will be held today at the same venue.
Rangpur were on brink of making an exit from the tournament after losing first two matches but they thereafter won two straight matches and finally pipped the teams like Guyana Amazon Warriors and Lahore Qalandars who also finished on four points but were bettered by BPL franchise on net run rate.
England’s Hampshire languished at bottom table with just one win from four matches and incidentally the victory came against Rangpur in Super Over.
Lahore could join Victoria in the final as they needed a direct victory but Rangpur’s spirited performance dented their hopes.
The match was reduced to nine overs a side due to rain and Rangpur which elected to bat first compiled 85-1, thanks to opener Steven Taylor’s 27 ball-32 not out and Saif Hasan’s 14 ball-27 not out. Another opener Soumya Sarkar blasted 13 ball-22 before being dismissed by Mirza Baig.
Pakistan side Lahore’s target was set 111 from nine over on DLS method.
However, they were able to put up 87-7 at the end and tasted a defeat. Miraz Baig made 20 ball-31 for top-score for the side.
The wrecker-in-chief was offspinner Mahedi Hasan who snapped up three wickets for 11 runs in two overs while Zak Chappel took 2-17.
