After days of sweltering heat and dust-laden air, a sudden spell of rain brought immense relief and joy to Dhaka residents on Sunday afternoon. The downpour, which lasted for about an hour in many parts of the capital, turned the city’s mood from restless to refreshed.
As dark clouds rolled over the skyline and the first drops began to fall, people across the city were seen taking in the moment with childlike enthusiasm. Children played barefoot in the streets, university students enjoyed the showers on campus rooftops, and even office-goers took brief pauses to watch the rain from balconies and windows.
“It felt like nature finally gave us a break,” said Sharmin Akter, a private university student in Dhanmondi. “We were all so tired of the heat – this rain was more than welcome.”
Social media platforms were quickly filled with snapshots of rain-drenched roads, tea stalls buzzing with customers, and couples walking under umbrellas. In TSC, Dhaka University students gathered in celebration, breaking into impromptu songs and rain dances.
The rain also brought temporary relief from the rising dust and pollution that had worsened Dhaka’s air quality in recent weeks. According to weather officials, the rainfall was triggered by a seasonal depression over the Bay of Bengal and may continue intermittently over the next few days.
However, in low-lying areas like Mirpur, Shantinagar, and parts of Old Dhaka, minor waterlogging disrupted traffic, reminding residents of the city’s poor drainage infrastructure.
Despite the inconveniences, the joy was palpable. “This is the kind of rain we wait for,” said rickshaw puller Rahmat Ali in Malibagh. “The city feels alive again.”
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, more rain is expected this week, likely bringing further relief to city dwellers bracing for the monsoon.
