Rangpur Correspondent :
Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) administration has expelled three students and warned nine others over a ragging incident at Bijoy-24 Hall.
Two students have been expelled for two academic terms, while one student has been expelled for one term.
The disciplinary action was approved at the 118th Syndicate meeting of the university on Wednesday.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shawkat Ali later confirmed the decision at a press conference.
The expelled students are Abdullah Al Mamun and Roki Ahmed (two terms), and Azizul Hakim (one term).
The nine warned students are Moniruzzaman, Golam Morshed Tami, Meghnath Roy, Masud Rana, Saidur Rahman Shakil, Sujon Mia, Akram Ali, Fahim Islam, and Farad Hossain.
Their guardians will also be informed. Additionally, all students involved have been declared ineligible to reside in any university hall for life.
The incident occurred on the night of 23 November, when some senior students of the Bengali Department called a few students of the 17th batch to the hall rooftop under the pretext of “teaching manners.”
It is alleged that Mamun, a 16th batch student, slapped Din Islam, a 17th batch student, over a rule violation.
Din Islam broke down in tears, and resident students rescued him and sent him to the hospital.
The Vice-Chancellor said at the press conference that the university is deeply saddened by the incident, which gained attention in media and social media.
The university follows a zero-tolerance policy against ragging and sexual harassment.
He added that a 24-hour notice investigation committee was formed immediately after learning about the incident.
After submitting the report to the disciplinary committee on Wednesday at 11 a.m., the punishment was unanimously approved.
