Staff Reporter :
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Meheraj Islam, the prime accused in the murder of Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez, from Gaibandha on Wednesday.
With Meheraj’s arrest, five individuals have now been taken into custody in connection with the case. Four of them are currently on seven-day remand for interrogation.
The brutal incident occurred on April 18, when Parvez and his friend Tarikul Islam were attacked by a group wielding local weapons on the road in front of Primeasia University, located in Banani, Dhaka. Parvez was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the murder, Parvez’s cousin Humayun Kabir filed a case with Banani Police Station, naming eight individuals and accusing 25 to 30 unidentified people.
Meanwhile, Hridoy Miazi, a leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement that played a key role in the political upheaval against the autocratic Sheikh Hasina regime, was also arrested and remanded for seven days in connection with the murder.
RAB-1 commander Lt Col Zahid confirmed Miazi’s arrest from Cumilla on April 22, and said that a Dhaka court has allowed investigators seven days to interrogate him further.
