Sr. Staff Reporter, Kishoreganj :

Locals have raised questions about the construction of a bridge over the Narsunda River in Kishoreganj.

The bridge is being built in a low position in the Raghukhali area in Mohinanda union of Kishoreganj Sadar.

Water is flowing about two feet below the bridge. As a result, no boats will be able to pass through it, according to local people.

They saids that, Narasunda river is already dying due to lack of proper renovation. They are worried about the future of the river after the construction of this bridge.

Rafiqul of the neighboring village of Chayna and Mansur Ali, a stationery trader from Raghukhali village, said that this time the monsoon water has not come at all.

That water is touching the girders of the bridge. If the monsoon water comes in full force, then a lot of the girders of the bridge will be submerged.

According to LGED, this bridge is being built under the Mymensingh Region Rural Infrastructure Development Project. Its length is 40 meters from the Raghukhali end in the north to the Chayna end of Boulai Union in the south. The bridge work was initially awarded to a contracting company named ‘HTBL-SAC’.

They only did the work of pillars or avertments and took away Tk 1 crore 39 lakh without installing the girders. Their work order was cancelled and the work was given to Bhairab’s contracting company, Messrs. Mominul Haque.

The new allocation is 2 crore 19 lakh 53 thousand 177 taka.
Locals said that if the bridge is built, it will connect the Kishoreganj-Jangalbari road and the Kishoreganj-Chamta river port road on both sides of the Narsunda River.

Thousands of vehicles ply on those two roads every day. Many vehicles have to travel several kilometers to get from one road to the other. If the Raghukhali bridge is built, it will reduce traffic congestion on both roads and end this suffering.

But building the bridge low will cause extreme damage to the river. Contractor Mominul Haque said that he is installing the bridge girders as designed by LGED. He has no opportunity to go beyond this.

Executive Engineer of LGED, Kishoreganj, Md. Enayet Kabir said that the contract was signed with the ‘HTBL-SAC’ contractor company on November 3, 2021. The work was supposed to be completed on November 29, 2022.
