Qualitative change in city’s water supply system aims at RWASA implementing Tk 34-cr project

Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (RWASA) has been implementing a project by spending around Taka 34 crore in order to bring a qualitative change in the city’s water supply system.
According to concerned sources, implementation works of the two and half-year project is progressing fast since beginning of this year. On successful implementation of the project by this yearend, a sustainable water supply system would be built in the metropolis through improvement of both financial and manpower management.
Parvez Mamud, Executive Engineer of RWASA, said the government has taken the project to increase the supply of safe water to the city dwellers as around 33 percent of the population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water as yet.
Main thrust of the project, ever first of the RWASA after established in 2011, is to increase its coverage to 87 percent from 67 percent of the city people.
He said the RWASA is supplying water to the eight lakh city dwellers through a treatment plant and 70 pumps after extracting groundwater. But the population is gradually increasing.
Besides, he stated there are 38,713 street hydrants and 3,811 shallow tube wells to provide water to the people.
“After implementation of the project, consumption of safe drinking water in the city would increase to 100-litre from the existing 65-litre,” the official said.
