Publisher’s Note
We had a vision to build up a knowledge based democratic society, where liberty and rule of law will prevail.
The press will be free and responsible. Judiciary will be independent. Public opinion will determine the course of politics. Social welfare will be the moto of government.
It was in the year 1979, we started our journey as a daily. Earliar The New Nation was a weekly. As an English daily our voyage was a tough one.
The current and wind was not favourable. But my husband Barrister Mainul Hosein , the captain of the ship was determined to continue the journey. As a political thiker, he wanted to serve the nation and making hard earned freedom meaningfull through newspaper. In his mission, he got substantial help from the journalist community.
Famous journalist A. B. Musha, Wahidul Hoq, Syed Atiqullah, Barrister Ziaur Rahman, Fazle Rashid ,Hassan Saiyeed , Alamgir Hossain, A. M. Mofazzal Hosein, Amanullah Kabir, Hasanuzzman Khan, Motiur Rahman, Kazi Montu, Afzal H. Khan, Aktar ul Hoq, Aronavo Sarker, Shihab Sarker, Amanullah Khan, Syed Badrul Ahasan, Zakaria Siraji, Azizul Islam and many others rendered their valuable services to The New Nation. We are remembering them with great respect during the celebrations of the 46th anniversary.
We have seen many ups and downs but the fate of the common people remained unchanged. During the prolonged autocratic rule of Sheikh Hasina people lost their voting right. Government also lost its legitimacy.
Being a free country when Bangladesh lost her voice then The New Nation emerged as a voice of the people. The writings of Mainul Hosein inspired the nation to fight against any type of manifestation of Fascist tendency of the government. He was harassed and jailed by the government of Hasina. Unfortunetly, he was not alive to see her tragic downfall, most tyrannical ruler of modern times.
We are fully aware of the facts that the road to freedom is a long journey. More devotion and contributions are needed to establish a democratic society and welfare state. Young generation has shown unique courage over throwing the autocratic rule.
Now the matured and experienced leaders should make the nation’s dream into reality. Dr. Mohammed Yunus is leading the nation towards true freedom and democracy. Hopefully, we are awaiting to see a free, fair election in February, 2026.
Finally, I like to congratulate the journalists, writers, researchers, academics for contributing to the 46th anniversary issue. I also giving thanks to the institutions and agencies who are supporting us by providing advertisement. Thanks to our readers for whom our staff members are working hard.
