Staff Reporter :
People involved in public transport management policies in the country do not use public transport.
So they do not understand sufferings and pain of general people.
Absence of discipline in the sector is due to a lack of coordination among public transport-related government agencies.
This was revealed at a press conference at the office of Road Safety Foundation (RSF) on Saturday.
The press conference was held on the occasion of the National Dialogue on Institutional Management and Structural Reforms.
Chairman of the foundation Professor AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed announced the declaration of national dialogue in the press conference.
He said, ‘Public transport normally transports 53 per cent of total passengers and the private ones 11 per cent.
But private vehicles occupy 70 per cent of the roads. It is an extreme discrimination against the common people.
The declaration further states that there is no legal bar to motor bikes and private vehicles in the capital. But there are many obstacles in bringing down buses and minibuses.
About Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the announcement said, the chairman of this institution is appointed from the administrative cadre, who has no real knowledge of roads or motor vehicles.
The Road Safety Foundation has suggested that BRTA should be chaired by an academician or a road and motor vehicle expert.
It is also recommended to have qualified manpower in the institute and to set up a driver training center under the control of BRTA.
