Protests have rocked Mymensingh after Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) supporters blocked railway and roads, by lighting up sporadic fires protesting the nomination for Mymensingh-10 constituency. The train services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route have remained suspended, while institutions in the city suspended their activities after the protest spread to streets in the Gafargaon Municipality, reports bdnews24.com.
Gafargaon Police chief Atikur Rahman said the railway blockade started at 3:30pm at the level crossing at Shibganj. The protesters also lit fires in many roads in the municipality, he said.
The protesters said the nomination of Akhteruzzaman Bacchu for Mymensingh-10 seat has made them upset, demanding that the nomination be cancelled immediately.
Sub Inspector Abul Bashar said that train services on Dhaka-Mymensingh route remained suspended.
Gafargaon Police chief Atik said police and Army have been deployed to contain the situation.
The announcement from the BNP on nominating Bacchu for the seat came on Saturday afternoon. Bangladesh has scheduled its parliamentary polls on Feb 12.
