The High Court has directed the removal of battery-powered rickshaws from Dhaka’s streets within three days, sparking widespread protests by drivers in various parts of the capital. The order, issued on November 19 by the bench of Justice Fatima Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi, came in response to a writ petition filed by the Brihottor Dhaka City Corporation Pedal-Rickshaw Malik Oikya Jote.
Following the ruling, drivers of battery-powered rickshaws staged protests on Thursday morning (November 21) in areas such as Mohakhali, Agargaon, Mohammadpur, Gabtoli, and Demra. They blocked roads, leading to severe traffic congestion and disruption in daily life. Protesters demanded the court reconsider the decision, citing its impact on their livelihoods.
The petitioners argued that battery-powered rickshaws, which operate without licenses, are illegal and contribute to traffic disorder and safety risks. The court also issued a rule questioning why the authorities had failed to address the issue earlier.
According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), these unregulated vehicles have worsened road safety, with many traditional rickshaws being illegally converted into motorized ones. While primarily used in side streets and alleys, they frequently venture onto main roads, causing congestion.
Approximately 12 lakh rickshaws operate in Dhaka, with a significant number being battery-powered. Drivers claim the vehicles are vital for affordable and convenient transportation in areas lacking proper public transit.
The protests underscore concerns about the socio-economic impact of the ban, as drivers and their families face potential unemployment. Authorities are now tasked with enforcing the court order while addressing the unrest it has sparked.
