Government employees and staff associations staged a protest rally in front of the National Press Club on Friday, demanding the immediate repeal of the newly issued Public Service Ordinance, which they have labeled as a “black law” and anti-employee legislation.
The demonstration, held at 11:30 AM, was organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum and the Bangladesh Government Employees’ Demands Implementation Unity Council.
Leaders of the protest stated that the ordinance grants excessive power that may be abused, ultimately harming government employees. They warned that if the ordinance is not withdrawn, they will launch tougher movements in the coming days.
In addition to opposing the ordinance, the protesters also demanded the withdrawal of the recently introduced 15pc benefit allowance, arguing that its implementation would nullify the existing 5pc special incentive they currently receive—causing financial loss to many employees.
They further called for the introduction of a 50pc dearness allowance to help offset rising living costs.
