Locals in Fatullah, Narayanganj, staged a protest on Sunday (April 20) by blocking the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road in Lamapara. They were opposing the construction of a truck stand next to the Fatullah International Cricket Stadium. The protest included a human chain and demonstrations, which led to a long traffic jam on the road.
During the protest, residents said that for the past few days, the Roads and Highways Department has been working to build a truck stand across from the stadium, right in front of a residential and industrial area. They fear that if the truck stand is built, it will attract outsiders, lead to gatherings, and become a hotspot for drug activity.
They added that this would disrupt the daily movement of at least 10,000 people, including local residents and thousands of workers from nearby factories. The locals demanded that the district administration cancel the plan to build the truck stand at this location. After the demonstration, they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding immediate cancellation of the project.
In response, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah said that under the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road development project, the Roads and Highways Department is constructing four vehicle stands of various sizes to ease traffic congestion and eliminate random parking around the city. However, he assured that the concerns of the locals would be given priority to ensure that the area does not become a hub for drug activity or disturb normal life.
